Chicken Road’s headline RTP is 98%. That number is one of the highest in casino gaming. But “98% RTP” gets misunderstood constantly — players think it means they’ll win back 98% of every session, or that the bird crosses 98% of lanes, or that the house only takes 2% per spin. None of those are right.
Here’s exactly what 98% means, how it’s calculated, why some Chicken Road instances run at 96.18%, and how to think about RTP as a player.
What 98% Actually Means
RTP — return to player — is a long-run average. Across millions of rounds, Chicken Road pays back €98 for every €100 wagered. The remaining €2 is the house edge.
Critically: that 98% is not your personal win rate, your session win rate, or even your monthly win rate. It’s an asymptotic value the game converges to over very large samples. A single 50-round session can return 200% of bets or 0% — variance dominates short-term outcomes.
The House Edge Is 2% — How Does the Casino Make Money?
The 2% house edge is the casino’s cut per amount wagered. If you wager €10,000 across many rounds, the casino on average keeps €200. That’s their margin. Not per session — per total volume.
Most players bleed faster than the math suggests because:
- They play long sessions, which gives variance time to catch them.
- They increase bets after losses (Martingale).
- They switch to higher-variance modes when they’re losing.
- They don’t cash out winning sessions.
If you played strictly disciplined Chicken Road for €10,000 of total volume at Medium mode with 2× cash-out, you’d land within around €100 of the 2% expected loss. Most players land €1,000-€2,000 worse than that.
How RTP Is Calculated
For each step in each difficulty mode, two values are defined:
- Probability of safe crossing at that step.
- Multiplier paid for cashing out at that step.
The expected value of cashing out at step N equals (cumulative survival probability) × (multiplier). The game tunes these values so the maximum expected value across all steps is 0.98 × your bet, regardless of which step you choose. That’s the 98% RTP.
This means: on Easy, Medium, Hard, and Hardcore — all four modes — the RTP is the same 98%. What changes is the variance, not the expected value.
Per-Mode Math Breakdown
Easy mode (24 steps, ~4% per-step risk)
Lower per-step multipliers, higher survival probabilities. Most rounds end in a small cash-out. Variance is low — a 100-round Easy session usually lands within ±25% of the bet total.
Medium mode (22 steps, ~12% per-step risk)
The reference mode. Multipliers and survival probabilities tuned for engaging play without runaway variance. A 100-round Medium session usually lands within ±50% of the bet total.
Hard mode (20 steps, ~20% per-step risk)
Each step is a coin flip you mostly win, but five-loss streaks become routine. A 100-round Hard session can land at ±200% of the bet total without being statistically weird.
Hardcore mode (15 steps, ~32% per-step risk)
Most rounds die fast. Occasional rounds reach absurd multipliers. Variance is enormous — a 100-round Hardcore session can land at -100% of bet total (you lose everything) or +500% (you hit a big multiplier once). Same 98% RTP averaged across millions of rounds.
Why Variance Matters More Than RTP for Real Sessions
Imagine two games both at 98% RTP. Game A pays a small amount frequently. Game B pays a huge amount very rarely. Same expected value, totally different experience and risk profile.
Chicken Road lets you choose which one you play via the difficulty mode. RTP is fixed at 98%; variance scales from low (Easy) to extreme (Hardcore). Your bankroll suitability depends on variance, not RTP.
Practical rule of thumb: lower variance is safer if you have a small bankroll. Higher variance is more efficient if you have a large bankroll and want to chase big payouts.
The 96.18% UK Version
If you’re in a UK-licensed casino, you’ll see Chicken Road’s RTP listed as 96.18%, not 98%. Why?
The UK Gambling Commission requires that every game variant be specifically certified per market. InOut Games shipped a separate UK-licensed build with a different mathematical tuning to meet that requirement. The result is a build with a higher house edge (3.82%) than the global version.
It’s still a perfectly good RTP — most UK slots run lower. But if you have a choice between a global-licensed casino and a UK-licensed casino, the global version pays slightly better mathematically.

- Expected long-run loss: €2.
- Likely actual loss range: €30 lost to €30 up (one standard deviation on Medium 2× target).
- Worst plausible loss: €70 lost (two standard deviations).
- Best plausible win: €70 up.
